On Monday, June 26, 32-year-old Freeport resident Tyshaun Johashen was arraigned on charges including aggravated vehicular homicide for his alleged role in the striking and killing of a young woman in March 2023, the Nassau County District Attorney announced.

He pleaded not guilty.

The incident in question occurred on March 1, 2023, in Freeport.

At approximately 7 p.m., 24-year-old Mia Pollidore was walking west across Babylon Turnpike near the intersection of Carroll Street, the DA’s Office reported.

That is when Johashen, allegedly driving his 2018 Nissan Sentra highly intoxicated, struck Pollidore, a resident of Freeport, while he was traveling south on Babylon Turnpike.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:10 p.m. after suffering trauma to her head and legs.

At the time of the crash, Johashen’s license had already been suspended in September 2022, pursuant to an additional pending DWI prosecution in Queens, according to the DA’s Office.

In full, Johashen was arraigned on the following charges:

  • Aggravated vehicular homicide;
  • Vehicular manslaughter, first- and second-degree;
  • Manslaughter;
  • Assault;
  • Aggravated driving while intoxicated;
  • Reckless driving;
  • Operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol; and
  • Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, first-, second-, and third-degree.

Bail was continued at $250,000 cash, $500,000 bond, and $2.25 million partially secured bond.

"This defendant, driving despite having his license suspended...was allegedly three times the legal limit for alcohol when he struck and killed Mia Pollidore as she simply tried to cross the street,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly.

"As we prosecute this case, we are also entering what is known as the 100 deadliest days on our roadways. I urge everyone taking to Nassau County’s highways, parkways, and streets to exercise their common sense: do not drink and drive."

"We cannot lose another life to drunk driving.”

Johashen is due back in court Tuesday, August 1.

If convicted, he faces up to eight-and-a-third to 25 years in prison.
